Understanding fire warden training requirements in the UK

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the primary fire safety law in England and Wales. It requires the responsible person to carry out a fire risk assessment, put suitable precautions in place and appoint enough competent people to help implement them. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 sets the wider duty to protect people at work. In Scotland the equivalent duties sit under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, and in Northern Ireland under the Fire and Rescue Services (NI) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (NI) 2010.

Fire is among the most serious risks any workplace faces. Most workplace fires are preventable, and smoke and toxic gases - not flames - cause the majority of fire deaths, often spreading far ahead of the fire itself.

Your Fire Marshal Certificate is valid for three years from the date of issue. A refresher is recommended around every three years, or sooner if your premises, layout or fire procedures change materially.

1. Prevent first - control ignition sources and keep combustible clutter to a minimum
2. Know the building - escape routes, final exits, alarm points and assembly point
3. Keep routes clear - fire doors closed, exits unlocked, nothing blocking the way
4. Check the equipment - alarms, signage, emergency lighting and extinguishers in place
5. Raise the alarm - on discovering a fire, sound the alarm without delay
6. Sweep and account - check your area, then carry out a roll-call at the assembly point
7. Use extinguishers within limits - only on a small fire, with your exit behind you
8. Record and review - log drills, faults and incidents to improve your plan
